PROBLEMS

A significant shift in workout routine after the pandemic

During the pandemic, traditional fitness routines were disrupted, leading to a significant shift towards home workouts and digital fitness solutions. This transformation created an opportunity to explore how technology could help people stay active.

As a UX designer, I worked on this side project to design an iOS fitness app, Fitz, aimed to help millennials maintain a consistent workout routine amidst their busy schedules.

Let's dive deeper into this...

$216B

Expected revenue in fitness industry for 2023

66%

Revenue increased in online fitness in 2021 compared to pre-pandemic

$59B

Projected revenue to reach by 2027 for online fitness

Guidance

150

mins

moderate to vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week should be met as outlined by the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines

Experience

1 in 5

Canadian said their fitness has gotten worse than before the pandemic as reported by CTV News

Format

73%

of Canadians say they prefer to exercise on their own rather than in a gym or group setting according to Made in Canada.

Behaviors

1 in 4 (1.4B)

do not meet the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week stated by PAHO.

To better understand the needs & pain points of my users...

I recruited participants that meet the following criteria:

  • Millennials in their 20s-30s.

  • Reside in Canada.

  • Have exercised at home before, varied levels.

  • Comfortable with using technology.

By grouping the insights from these interviews, I identified four key themes that set my design direction

  1. Content and Access: Easy access to tailored fitness content is crucial.

  2. Motivations and Social Support: Social interactions boost motivation, yet external factors can hinder consistency.

  3. Time Management: Busy schedules are a significant barrier

  4. Personalized Routine and Progress: Finding and sticking to a tailored routine is challenging.

To solve for this issue...

How might we encourage millennials to maintain regular physical activities so that they can incorporate regular physical activity into their lifestyles for their overall well-being?

Meet Julie, Our Persona

Ideate tangible features based on interview findings through user stories

By creating user stories, I was able to ensure that FitLife's design and features were deeply aligned with the real-world needs and behaviors of its target users.

How did Fitz come to life?

Start a Workout Task Flow

My design process starts from the typical process of how my user explores a range of workout options, then selects one of the options to take a closer look, and they start their workout! How smooth this process is! Everything seems so seamlessly

However, How can we encourage users to start their workout?

Looking back at my persona, she is the working professional that doesn't have enough time and knowledge to build an effective and efficient workout routines for her, therefore, I decided to add the feature of letting the user quickly create a training plan with the help of AI, and the most engaging way to get started is by having an intuitive and casual conversation with Lilia, our AI bot agent!🤖

And how can we facilitate action?

Now that the training plan is created with our power AI bot, Lilia 🤖, now the challenge is how can we encourage users to ACT NOW? and integrate this into their daily life and eventually turn it into their habits?

PROJECT EVALUATION

• Comprehensive research to inform design decisions:

Conducting extensive secondary research on the problem and user research is essential to understand the impact of the issue and the demand for a solution, ensuring it's desirable for humans, feasible with technology, and viable for business.

• Prototyping for Iteration

Throughout the project, I applied the Double Diamond design process as my guiding framework. This allowed me to systematically explore and define user needs in the divergent stages, then converge on refined solutions through iterative cycles of prototyping and testing. This iterative process has led me to go through several iterations, resulting in a more robust and optimized experience.

Next Steps

Keep Evolving

The journey doesn't end here. I'm committed to fine-tuning the app based on user feedback. After all, perfection is a marathon, not a sprint.

Accessibility

Evaluate and enhance the app's accessibility to ensure inclusivity for users with disabilities. This includes considerations for color contrast, text size, and screen reader compatibility.
